Job Description for Chiropractic Assistant
The person who helps set up appointments, answers the phone, keeps patient records, and facilitates payments at a chiropractic office is the chiropractic assistant. He or she works with the chiropractor and act as the go-between to help manage an efficient flow of patients to maximize staff time during office hours.
Chiropractic assistants must possess excellent telephone skills and be willing to work with existing and new patients to help set up appointments. The assistant also serves as the “face” of the chiropractic office and should cheerfully greet each person arriving for an appointment and ensure that any delays or waiting time to see the chiropractor is communicated in a positive and patient-friendly manner.
The chiropractic assistant also helps keep records updated of patient visits and must have that information organized in a manner that allows the chiropractor to easily access this data. In part because many chiropractic services are generally not covered by insurance companies, the assistant is expected to process payments for patients as necessary.
The educational requirements for the position are normally a high school diploma or equivalent. In larger chiropractic practices, the chiropractors may prefer to hire persons with previous office experience in the field. Chiropractic assistants normally work regular business hours, although some chiropractors do offer a few days where evening appointments are accepted as well. Assistants need strong organizational skills and an ability to spend much of their workday on their feet. A good familiarity with computers and some data entry is also preferred.
